A German shepherd protected his 16-year-old owner from harm after burglars broke into their home in Des Moines, Washington.
“A 16-year-old boy who was home alone said he believed someone was breaking in,” said Des Moines Police Cmdr. Doug Jenkins. “He heard noises and voices, ran upstairs and hid in the closet. He continued relaying everything he heard on the phone with dispatch. The dog in the residence was barking. Then he heard breaking glass, and the dog still barking. Then he heard gunshots and the dog was no longer barking.”
Apparently, the dog named Rex confronted the thieves who beat him badly and even fired shots at him.
“Rex’s instinct to protect his home and his best friend, took him downstairs and he attacked the burglars. Both of the burglars struggled and beat him up with whatever they could,” wrote the teen’s aunt on their GoFundMe page. “Rex stormed back to the upstairs floor all beat up and bloody from the beating to check on his master who was still hiding in the closet.”
When the burglars went to the room where the teen was hiding, Rex gave his all to ensure his owner’s safety.
“Soon, the burglars proceeded to the upstairs floor and trashed all the bedrooms. As they entered the room where my nephew was hiding in the closet, Rex came out with the little strength he had left in him and threw himself at them as he knew my nephew was in danger. Sadly they shot Rex 4 times and finally Rex, the héroe dog gave up in his battle,” the teen’s aunt said.
Fortunately, before it was too late, the police arrived and secured the place.
The 16-year-old boy was unharmed, but Rex was in critical condition, needing an expensive surgery that would help him survive.
The family started a crowdsourcing campaign with the title, “Help Save Rex the Heroe Dog”. To date, the donations already amounted to over $60,000, surpassing the family’s goal of $10,000.
